The size does matter a lot while choosing your surfboard especially when you are a beginner. And if you are going for your first board right now, you shouldn’t make any mistake in that. As no two boards are alike to handle the same weight, wave types and skill level. you should choose your board wisely. So no worry we have prepared a surfboard size chart that will help you a lot while selecting your best board. Before going into the size chart, let’s have a brief understanding of board types. You can classify the boards in several ways, but here we will classify the boards by shape and length. With shape and length, if we can find the right thickness, we can have the right board as well.

Types of boards based on shape and length

Shortboards:

  • There is a difference of opinion regarding the size of a shortboard. But any board which is under 6 ft. or 6 ft. 6 inches is considered as a shortboard.
  • The shortboard is ideal for advanced riders. Many confident intermediate+ riders can go for it but there is no room for beginners.

Fish boards:

  • A fish board can be from 5 ft. 4 inches. to 7 ft. 10 inches.
  • Fish boards are ideal for beginners to advance riders. (Here beginners in the sense kids, as they have lighter weight. Fish board is not for adult beginners)

Minimal boards:

  • Minimal Boards are generally sized from 6 ft.8inch. and 9ft
  • Minimal boards are ideal for the Intermediate rider who wants to perform maneuverability along with longboard feel.

Long Board:

  • The length of a longboard can be extended from 8 ft. – 12 ft.
  • Longboard is ideal for beginners.

Why surfboard size chart is essential?

From the above discussion, you can fit yourselves in any skill category and you can go for your board. But the problem is the skill is not directly proportional your to weight and age. Meaning you may be a beginner but your weight may be 65+ kg. So, in that case, you required to look at the surfboard size chart to get the right board.
