What’s rash guard?

A Rash Guard is a kind of tight-fitting sports shirt made up of synthetic fibers such as nylon, polyester or Spandex. Specially designed to protect your skin from sunlight. A Rash Guard can be worn alone or under a wetsuit. Rash guards are generally found for upper body but there are also lower body Rash Guards available in the market which are specially designed for surfers to be used under shorts.

Rash guards and swim shirts are the almost same thing. Differences:

  • Swim shirts are loose fitting and Rash Guards are tight fitting.


  • Many swim shirts have UV radiation protection just like Rash Guard.

Purpose: If you are looking for a Rash Guards for surfing or paddling or any sports where you think you have to spend more time water, you should choose a Rash Guard which is made up of Neoprene as it will keep you warm. Even if the weather will warm still you need a warmth cloth as you will have to spend more time on the water. If you are looking for general sun protection or normal waters sports, you should go for polyester/spandex Rashguards. As this will keep you feeling good with normal temperature along with UV protection. Level of Ultraviolet Protection: As mentioned earlier UPF factor is more important to look at while choosing a Rash Guard.  It depends on the material used in the rash guard. Higher the UPF factor means higher the protection.
